This map shows Eastern Europe and Anatolia at the birth of the Ottoman Empire, which grew from the Baylik of Osman, shown above. The Ottomans quickly grew to be the chief antagonists of the Byzantine Empire, shown here as the Empire of the Romans. (“Byzantine” is a nineteenth-century usage; the Byzantine Empire was, of course, the Eastern Roman Empire.) It was to the Ottomans that Constantinople fell a century and a half later.
